Tragedy struck before the Port Broughton Dawn Service yesterday, 25 April, as a World War II veteran died on his way to the service.
It’s suspected 98-year-old John Atkinson, who served in Darwin, Papau New Guinea and the Phillipines, suffered a medical episode when he fell from his mobility scooter, sadly dying at the scene.
The veteran was supposed to lead his local RSL’s march that morning – something he’d done for several years.

The Advertiser reports he’s remembered as a “wonderful, wonderful man” with a “heart bigger than what he was.”
