Port Pirie Hospital Have Experienced Another Incident of Violence

Staff at the Port Pirie Hospital have experienced another incident of violence in less than a week since the last.

A woman in her 70s with dementia punched one nurse in the stomach and one in the torso, following a separate incident involving a patient a patient assaulting 3 doctors and 2 nurses in mid-June.

The Yorke and Northern Local Health Network has offered support to the staff and pledged to implement security measures across hospitals and aged care sites.

However, there are calls from the union and the Shadow Minister for Regional Health to immediately hire restraint-trained security guards at the hospital.

The South Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation is conducting a safety inspection and emphasizes the need for 24/7 security.

They point to the success of Whyalla and Port Augusta hospital, who have introduced a 24/7 security presence and have seen a reduction in violence and aggression.
