In a significant development in the fight against fruit flies, Port Augusta’s National Sterile Insect Technique facility is undergoing a $3 million expansion.
Funded under the Federal Government’s $30 million “Building Resilience to Manage Fruit Fly” program the expansion marks a significant stride forward.
The upgraded centre will double its capacity, ramping up the production of sterile Queensland fruit flies from 20 to 40 million each week.
This program disrupts fruit fly populations by preventing fertile offspring.
Fruit flies are notorious as horticultural pests, causing damage to crops, gardens, and trade access.
