Bluescope Leads Bid to Acquire Whyalla Steelworks

Australian steelmaker BlueScope has been named as the frontrunner to take over the Whyalla Steelworks, leading an international consortium of buyers.

The group includes three major international players in the steel industry – Nippon Steel from Japan, JSW from India, and South Korea’s POSCO – all expressing strong interest in acquiring the facility.

Mining and Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the the consortium’s interest was great news but that the sale was not expected to be finalised until the second half of 2026.
