In an odd series of events early Wednesday morning, police in Port Augusta West were responding an automatic emergency call from an iPhone reporting a crash on Caroona Road.
While en route to the location, they noticed a heavily damaged Toyota station wagon and attempted to stop it.
The vehicle refused to halt and fled from the police. After a brief pursuit through the residential streets of Port Augusta West, the car eventually pulled into a driveway on Sanderson Street.
Both the driver and the passenger in the vehicle, one of whoms phone had automatically called the police on impact, sustained minor injuries and were taken to Port Augusta Hospital for treatment.
The driver, a 17-year-old boy from Port Augusta West, was subsequently arrested on several charges, including driving under the influence (DUI), engaging in a pursuit, driving dangerously, breaching license conditions, and obstructing the police.
He has been denied bail and will appear in court at a later date.
