The introduction of alcohol restrictions in Port Augusta has led to a decline in serious head injuries and alcohol-related harm, according to the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner.
The measures were implemented last year to address community concerns and have since remained under continuous review.
Key points include limitations on alcohol purchases—bottle shops opening after 11 am and restrictions on the quantity bought.
After a successful 10-month trial, these rules were solidified in November 2022.
The positive impact of reduced alcohol availability were highlighted, leading to fewer serious injuries and better engagement with health services.
Besides Port Augusta, alcohol purchasing restrictions are in place in Ceduna, Coober Pedy, and Whyalla.
The initiative’s success has prompted discussions about similar restrictions in other regions.
