The major highway intersection at Port Wakefield has been identified as one of South Australia’s worst hot spots for right-angle crashes, according to a landmark road safety report.
A 10-year study by Adelaide University’s Centre for Automotive Safety Research revealed that 20 serious broadside collisions occurred at the junction of the Princes Highway and Copper Coast Highway – a primary gateway for travelers heading to the Yorke Peninsula.
The research examined almost 60 casualty crashes across the state and found that over half were caused by drivers who slowed down or stopped at Give Way or Stop signs, but then pulled out without properly giving way.
With roundabouts or traffic lights not always practical at busy regional junctions, road safety experts are urging motorists to pay extra attention and take care when navigating major intersections.
