One of South Australia’s most historic tourist attractions has been temporarily closed amid a dispute between local volunteers and the National Trust of South Australia.
The National Trust has shut the Moonta Mines heritage site — including the museum, tourist railway and other visitor attractions — for at least five weeks, with the closure expected to remain in place until Easter.
The decision has sparked backlash from the local community, with committee members disputing claims made by the Trust and alleging they were sidelined without evidence or adequate consultation.
The National Trust says the closure is necessary to safeguard operations and allow reforms aimed at improving safety, management and financial oversight at the complex site. It also says the move will support a bid for UNESCO World Heritage listing.
Local volunteers, however, have raised concerns about how the decision was handled, including claims of restricted access to the site.
The Trust says the Moonta Mines heritage site is expected to reopen by Easter.
