Whyalla Shipyard Overlooked in Oil Vessel Decommissioning Deal

The Federal Government has confirmed the Northern Endeavour oil vessel will be decommissioned overseas, despite a local push to have the work done in Whyalla.

Australian company United Salvage had bid for the job, arguing the town’s existing shipyard infrastructure could handle the work.

However, the Federal Government instead opted to send the project to a Danish company, claiming Australia does not currently have the right facilities to safely recycle a vessel of that size.

Member for Grey, Tom Venning told the Transcontinental the deal was a missed opportunity, adding that it could have been a chance to bring a new industry to Australia.

The Northern Endeavour was a floating oil production vessel that operated in the Timor Sea until it was shut down in 2020.
