The State Government has allowed prawn fleets to fish in protected snapper breeding zones in the Spencer Gulf.
A Ministerial Exemption has been provided to the Spencer Gulf prawn fleet to fish in the closed areas that were put in place to protect depleted Snapper stocks.
RecFish SA believes that prawn trawling in the closed areas poses a significant risk to protected Snapper stocks and calls on Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Tim Whetstone to reverse this decision.
PIRSA responded to the claims saying prawn fishing has been undertaken in Spencer Gulf since the late 1960's.
They say it is not considered to be a contributing factor to the current depleted status of Snapper in Spencer Gulf.
