Junior Doctors Begin Placements in Region

emergency.jpgFive new medical interns have begun their careers this week at the Whyalla Hospital and Health Service as part of the State Government’s investment in regional doctors.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing says the intern program is an exciting first for Whyalla and is set to more than double the number of junior doctors training in regional South Australian hospitals.

The $20 million Rural Health Workforce Strategy aims to address the shortage of health practitioners in country areas.

Medical Director of the Adelaide Rural Clinical School Dr David Mills says the placements are an excellent opportunity for both the new medical interns and the wider community.

During the intern’s 12-month placements, they will conduct medical and surgical rotations at Whyalla Hospital and Health Service and General Practice rotations in Port Lincoln and Port Augusta.
