Port Augusta and surrounds firefighters dispatched to tackle APY Lands blaze

Firefighter generic.jpgPort Augusta crews are working around the clock in their efforts to control a fire burning through SA’s APY Lands.
The fire has already burnt through about 125,000 hectares, almost twice the size of the country Singapore.
Indigenous lead brigades , were the first to respond to the fire breaking out at Kenmore, but it soon became apparent that they needed help, and a break.
So 12 fire crews; 9 from Port Augusta and surrounding areas as well as three from Cooper Pedy- have headed up there to bolster the defence.
Phil Tapscott- Regional Duty Commander with Port Augusta CFS says at the moment they’re working four day deployments in shifts.
The only good news at the moment is the fire is burning in a rather isolated region, and hasn’t claimed any houses as of yet.
