The Mayors and Council CEO’s of the Upper Spencer Gulf recently had a day trip to the Oz Minerals Carrapateena copper-gold project, some 160km north of Port Augusta.

Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin and CEO Chris Cowley, Port Augusta Mayor Brett Benbow and CEO John Banks and Port Pirie Mayor Leon Stephens and CEO Peter Ackland were all part of a roadtrip to the Carrapateena site.

The strong focus on local procurement and workforce was a key feature for the Mayors with Mayor McLaughlin said she was very pleased to see Oz Minerals are prioritising local employment.

“With the jobs growth opportunities expected from construction through to production on the Carrapateena project over coming years, it will provide a tremendous boost for our three Upper Spencer Gulf cities and for the state,” said Mayor McLaughlin.

The Mayors also commended the approach by Oz Minerals to community engagement and maximising local benefit from the project.

“Right from the start, Oz Minerals have been very genuine in their engagement with our communities and demonstrated a strong desire to do the right thing by us. We really appreciate that,” said Port Augusta Mayor, Brett Benbow.
