Its an exciting week for students and teachers across the region with the first term of the 2021 school year getting underway this week.
We wish all students, parents and teachers an excellent start to the new year.
Motorists are being reminded to expect increased activity around school zones and to adhere to the reduced speeds in place.
Its expected SAPOL will be paying attention to driver behaviour in new school zones. Similar to previous years with the running of 'Operation Return to School'.
Last year, Operation Return to School and was conducted between peak drop-off times of 8am to 9am, and peak pick-up times of 2:45pm to 3:45pm.
In July 2020, SAPOL visited 326 schools during the operation, with a total of 120 expiation notices issued for offences including exceeding the speed limit, seatbelt related offences, mobile phone use and licence and registration offences. 2 motorists tested positive to drugs and another driver allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.065.
The message from police is simple: Do not drug or drink drive and adhere to all road rules because there are no excuses or exceptions.
Term 1 of the new school year starts this Wednesday and will concludeon Friday the 9th of April.
